Overview
Land subsidence is the phenomenon that land is lowering. Land subsidence has several reason such as groundwater extraction, building/natural compaction and tectonic. The only reason which able to be controlled by human is groundwater extraction. Massive and excessive groundwater abstraction will lead to void of water in sand layer. In process to fill the void in sand layer, water will flow from clay located on above and below. Through that process the result is clay layer will be consolidated. Once the deep clay layer is recharged by water, the clay cannot be possible same as the initial condition. Hence, once land subsidence happened, the land level of course cannot be possible return to the initial level. In Jakarta land subsidence is mostly occurred in Pluit, Cakung and Cengkareng
JICA Project
Promoting Countermeasures Against Land Subsidence in Jakarta
Sustainable Development Goal
Project also contributes to SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL. In the Project, countermeasures to mitigate land subsidence phenomenon are referred to as “mitigation measures” while the countermeasures against disasters that induced by land subsidence such as floods and high tides are referred as “adaptation measures”. Since the Project can contribute to the risk reduction of disaster induced by climate change such as sea water rise or torrential rainfall, the Project can also be said to provide adaptation measures against climate change. By reducing water related disaster, the Project will also protecting the poor people in vulnerable situation. Aside from these, provision of alternative water resources is one of the key challenges in the Project, as such, it can also contribute to safe and sustainable water use.
